How Fruit Can Cause Acid Erosion

But what if you only engage in those treats occasionally and are still noticing signs of tooth erosion? The culprits might not be the “usual suspects”.
Fruits that Cause Acid Erosion
Yes! You read that right: FRUITS! If your diet is rich in fruit content, the acid in it could be what is causing damage to your teeth. Not all fruit are high in acid, but many are, including these:
Pretty much any citrus fruit is considered high in acidic content. But many canned and preserved fruits can become more acidic because of how they are processed.
What determines the acidity?
Let’s stop here for just a moment and talk about what “acidity” actually means. When some people hear the word “acid”, they automatically assume that it means “sour” or “bitter”. But the lack of sweetness in a fruit isn’t what causes acid erosion.
Acidity is determined by the pH value of a fruit. The higher content of acid, the lower the pH level. Low pH content in your body can produce a number of disturbing issues, including acid erosion of the teeth.
The rule for highly acidic foods is the same as it is in any well-balanced diet: All things in moderation.
Symptoms Your Body’s pH is too Low
A person is considered as having acidosis when the pH in their blood drops to below 7.35. Normal pH levels are considered at 7.4.

These might seem like minor or insignificant symptoms. But if your bodily fluids maintain too low an amount of pH, you could be in long-term trouble!

Other problems caused by highly acidic foods
Acid reflux and other gastrointestinal disorders can be aggravated by eating a diet rich in acidic foods. But long term consumption of these foods can also cause problems with your heart, liver, skin, and pancreas. Some have even been linked to the risk of developing Alzheimer’s!

Before you start throwing out all the fruit in the house, take a look at the ones you’ll want to keep on your grocery list. These fruits are less likely to cause acid erosion and have some great health benefits to boot!
In addition to being easily digested, bananas are high in potassium. Potassium is a natural stress reducer. It is also essential to your heart, brain, kidney, and muscle health.
Potassium also helps regulate blood sugar and maintain normal muscle contraction. If you like to include fruit in your diet because you’re trying to lose weight, you’re in luck! The potassium found in bananas also helps with your metabolism.
Dates and Figs
These little gems can be considered a treat when adding them to your diet. Consider them nature’s dessert. They are sweet while maintaining a low acid content.
Watermelon, cantaloupe, and honeydew are great fruits to keep in your diet. These fruits are high in Vitamin C, Vitamin A, and fiber. Many people like to keep tomatoes in their diet because of the benefits of lycopene. If you’re trying to eliminate acid erosion from your lifestyle, the tomatoes may have to go.
Good news! Lycopene is also found in watermelon. More of it, in fact! This powerful antioxidant can help reduce the risk of certain cancers as well as heart attacks.
Papaya is also rich in vitamins and fiber and includes a healthy amount of lycopene as well. Chronic inflammation has been considered to be at the root of many other health issues. The antioxidants found in fruits like papaya have also been linked to reducing inflammation in the body.
This amazing little fruit can make digestion easier and has been used as a natural aid in helping with the symptoms of IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome).
